Trasforming an Inn, Restaurant and Bar into an Idyllic Library in The Heart of Covelo

In the fall of 2008 Menton Builders, a family business originally founded in Covelo in 1979 by Estok Menton, was approached by the nonprofit organization FRVPL (Friends of the Round Valley Public Library) and asked to serve as General Contractor in the renovation, repair, and repurposing of the then vacant building on the corner of Howard and Main streets, formerly the Round Valley Inn Restaurant and Bar.

We understood and recognized the community’s need for an updated library and community center. After meeting with the dedicated group and visiting the cramped current library facility we concluded that we would undertake this project in Covelo.

The new location offered a more functional multi purposed space. We understood that the financial constraints and scope of the project presented challenges which in the end were met by All. The Menton Family’s long term connection and ties to Round Valley, the community of Covelo, and to the building itself convinced us to proceed.

Volunteers enlisted, the building was stripped to its structural core. It was a challenging task given the decaying conditions. Once the bones of the structure were revealed we saw its potential and dug in. The entire roof and ceiling assembly were rebuilt, and a new lighting monitor was included allowing natural light to flood the building’s once dark core, as well as supporting a future solar array. Salvaged wood was up cycled for trims and finishes.

After about a year and a half of diligent effort and plenty of local elbow grease the result became a functional, beautiful, and inspiring public space. We acknowledge the selfless effort offered by many community members and the expertise of Bob Axt, Architect, who helped design the beautiful bathrooms and provided guidance on structural engineering matters.

From start to finish it took about two years for the Library doors to open. Now having earned recognition and named the best small library in America, Menton Builders is proud to be part of this noteworthy achievement and distinction. The Library Commons has returned the heart of Covelo to Main Street, and is under the respectful stewardship of its residents and local community.
